Despite its undeniable beauty and status as the old capital of Moravia, Olomouc remains largely underappreciated by international visitors. Most guidebooks give the city only a cursory glance and skip straight to the tourism heavyweights like Prague and Cesky Krumlov. Most visitors therefore tend to underestimate the time they need to see Olomouc and that's where we can help.
You really need three full days to see everything, and that's before daytrips into the countryside. If you don't have that long though, please consider our East, Westand Offbeat tours as one way to get the most out of limited time in this magnificent old city. We offer short walking tours through the old town and a cycle tour that visits the sights of the inner suburbs and along the river. In addition we're willing to consider customizing our tours to your requirements. If you're especially interested in one facet of Olomouc's history we may be able to arrange a tour to suit your interests. Drop the Jewish gate and University courtyard and add the Orthodox Church and Hradisko monastery for example.
Olomouc is the Czech Republic's fifth city in terms of population, but is second in terms of history and architecture. The 2nd-largest historic preservation zone, 2nd-oldest university, 2nd of the two astronomical clocks, 2nd-tallest cathedral spire, 2nd-oldest monastery all find their home in Olomouc and, along with Prague it's the 2nd-of the old medieval capitals (of Bohemia and Moravia). But there are also lots of firsts, the largest pipe organ in Central Europe with 10400 pipes, the country's only Archdiocese Museum, and the largest baroque sculpture in Europe; the UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column.
The real charm of the city though lies not in these impressive lists of monuments and achievements. Actually it's difficult to pin down the magic of Olomouc in words but the location on the meandering Morava River, the wide ring of parks around the old city walls, the gentle pace of the locals and the cultural life attached to the university all play their roles. Anyone who gives the city at least half a chance is bound to come away impressed and inspired. (By 'half a chance', we don't mean people who pass through for two hours on a bus tour or those who come for one night and spend most of it in their hotel lobby checking emails).
All tours are planned and led by licensed guides who are residents of Olomouc. Who better to help you find your way around than someone who lives here? Please consider our East, West and Offbeat tours or contact us directly if you have any specific requirements.
We look forward to welcoming you to the magnificent ancient city of Olomouc soon…
